About 1099 Compass
1099 Compass is a small library of money guides for people who work for themselves: freelancers, contractors, gig drivers and delivery workers, online sellers and anyone with a side hustle. If you get paid on a 1099, nobody withholds tax, offers a retirement plan or hands you health insurance. These guides explain how to handle each of those yourself, in plain English.
What we cover
- Freelancer Taxes
- Retirement and Investing
- Business Banking and Cash Flow
- Insurance and Health Coverage
- Invoicing, Bookkeeping and Software
- Gig and Side Hustle Money
- Business Setup and Structure
We also offer two free calculators: a tax set-aside estimator and an hourly rate calculator.
Who writes the guides
Guides are written by Isaac, founder and editor of 1099 Compass. Every guide lists the IRS publications it draws on, and our editorial policy explains how we research and update them. 1099 Compass is not a tax or accounting firm, so for advice on your own situation, talk to a CPA, Enrolled Agent or other qualified professional.
How the site is funded
The site may show advertising and may include affiliate links in the future. Neither affects what a guide says. See our affiliate disclosure.
